Is your birth control working in 2 ways?

I have been talking with a friend about the effects of birth control. I am, of course, talking about other than preventing pregnancy. Does it make you or help keep you fat? I have been doing Crossfit for 9 months and have not lost any weight. Last time I was this good about working out I lost a lot of weight in 6 months. I work out much harder with Crossfit and I know I am a lot stronger than I use to be. So, what is the difference... the pill? I am going to put up 2 photos. First is my fat Bea photo and the second is me 6 months later. All I changed was my activity level I did not change my diet.

Plese forgive the bathing suite. I think I might go off the pill again and use other methods of preventing pregnancy. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Posting the fat Bea picture was very hard.

  1. I'm not super thrilled with the pill for a variety of reasons, but I don't know if it affects my metabolism/body composition as much as it does for some people. While I probably was a bit smaller when I went off for awhile, I can't attribute any causation because I was also under a lot of stress at the time and probably not eating enough.

You could try changing the formula - triphasic v. monophasic, lo v. high, etc. Unfortunately, there is no hard science about what works best for any one woman and you kind of have to shop around. My doc was fairly enthusiastic about plastic IUDs as being beneficial and cost effective with minimal negative effects, but they still have hormones (progestin) and they are only a viable option if you don't want to get pregnant in the next 5 years. Good luck figuring things out!

  2. I second Becky's comment about needing to "shop around" a bit. I had to try several different kinds before finding one that worked for me. One made me puke my guts out for days at a time, another made me an irrationally angry bitch at all times (so bad that my boss asked if I was going through some personal problems at home!!), and another made me break out like a 13 year old boy. It was a pain in the ass trying new things, but I finally found what was right for me, and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Bottom line is that I wouldn't write the pill off all together (unless there are other reasons besides weight that you want to get off it) before you talk with your doc and give something else a try.
